This kingdom marks an important era in not only the political identity of Thailand, but is also significant for the development of a unique and typical iconography of Buddha Shakyamuni.
In this image, representative of Sukhothai aesthetics, the Buddha's face is slightly oval, and the ears long and crescent shaped with pointed ends. The most significant aspect of the Sukhothai Buddha is however the towering flame at the top of his head, signifying his enlightened wisdom. The head is covered with curving hair, and the Buddha has a hooked nose and downward gaze. Indeed, an image imbued with spiritual tranquility, as much as aesthetic merit.
